The Name Returns at the Geneva Motor Show

Manifattura Automobili Torino unveiled the New Stratos at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in a limited series of 25 units. The project revives the name of the Lancia Stratos, rally champion of the 1970s, reinterpreted on a modern technical base.

The idea originated in 2010 from a request by German industrialist Michael Stoschek to Paolo Garella, then head of special projects at Pininfarina. The first one-off unit was built on a shortened Ferrari F430 Scuderia chassis, powered by the 540-horsepower V8, weighing 1,247 kg. The attempt to turn it into a small production run was blocked by Ferrari. Garella then founded MAT, striking a deal with the Stoschek family and launching production in Rivalta di Torino.

Technical Specifications and Configurations

Customers must independently source a donor F430 Scuderia; the conversion is carried out at the Turin facility, where MAT also builds the Intensa Emozione for Apollo. Three versions are available: road, rally, and Safari for off-road use.

The aluminum chassis is shortened by about 20 centimeters in wheelbase, with a steel roll cage and carbon fiber bodywork. Weight distribution is 44/56, with adjustable suspension using Eibach springs, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The 4.3-liter V8, producing 540 horsepower and upgradable to around 600 on request, sends power to the rear wheels only through a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

The 2019 Encore and the Manual Version

In 2019, MAT returned to Geneva with the New Stratos in Alitalia livery, the same as historic rally cars, announcing a manual gearbox version. The headlights are an original design from the project, while the taillights are derived from a Ferrari 599.

Declared performance figures show 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 9.7 seconds, and a top speed up to 330 km/h depending on configuration, with a weight-to-power ratio of 2.3 kg/hp. The 2,400 mm wheelbase and low center of gravity were engineered for narrow, winding roads, staying true to the rally heritage of the original car.

Current Distribution

Units have been delivered to markets ranging from the United States to Australia, passing through Europe, confirming the ongoing production continuity of the project launched by MAT in Turin.
